One of my younger sisters is doing a project for her Spanish class. She needs to prepare a food dish and bring it to her class so they can eat it.
So far I've suggested taquitos, chips and dip (salsa and guacamole), quesadillas, and enchiladas and she hasn't been thrilled with them.
And so that brings me to all of you. Do you have any suggestions for her? Well, technically, I'll probably end up cooking it, but you know. It can be anything from appetizers to dessert, but it should be cheap because I'm not spending that much money to feed fifteen 13 year olds and a teacher.

I'd suggest making guacamole from scratch... the whole process of mashing the avocados and all the other ingredients. Maybe doing it live in front of people?
I know you have guac in your list of ideas but I didn't know if you meant *real* guacamole ;)

I wouldn't have it if I didn't make it myself or if I knew that it wasn't made fresh. I've had store bought guac before, and while it's not *that* bad, why buy that when making it yourself tastes so much better. It's not like it takes forever to make it either.

I second cooper: Flan. Of course, if you want to be a bit non-lazy about it and get something with a fair yield (should cover everyone without being TOO expensive), you can try Frijoles Charro. There's a recipe for it here, but I would add to it some sofrito, which you can buy at a store or make it like this:
All this should be cut up, put in a blender until it's a paste, then used as a base for the frijoles.
Of course, if you want this to do double-duty, save a portion of the mixture, unblended, with only a sprinkle of olive oil. (In this case, make sure the garlic's crushed.) Now, instead of a sofrito base, you have some nice "salsa" (except I feel wrong calling it that if you don't actually use tomato paste, since it's not really liquid, and "salsa" means "sauce".)

Tamales or Empanadas???
Something with masa flour, beef, pork, or chicken... and a home-made salsa verde with tomatillos... At least that sounds pretty good to me!!!

Now I'm really hungry. :)
I'm going to eventually try all of these for my own purposes. My sister decided that she wants empanadas. She said to me "Now all you have to do is buy all the stuff and make them." 'scuse me?
I'm going to go to the grocery store tonight and pick up some stuff. I'll try out a couple of the recipes you all suggested and see if I can convince her to do one of those.

@joshawesome: you can buy pre-made empanadas at just about any latin food store.
