Can you find the United States?

I was reading a post about how Miss South Carolina jacked up a question about how a 5th of the people in the U.S. can't find the United States on a world map.
Aside from her answer, which was painful, it's sad that people can't find the country they live in on a map.
So here it is, a post of the world map with The United States in "Green" under the "Gold" Canada. Extra credit for those who find Alaska and Hawaii.

hmm, in the Netherlands there used to be a tv show named "De Vakantieman" or "The Holiday Man" (I think).. Anyway the followed dutch tourists true Europe and also asked them to point on the map where they live (Netherlands) about 70% knew that. the other 30% pointed either Germany or Belgium..
now the sad question "Indicate on the map where you are now".
Ie. about 20% could point the country where they currently are. and about 30% of those who could indicate the right country also managed to "guess" the city they where sleeping in...

The question that girl had was a bit misleading, I think. (Either way, of course, she botched it up entirely!) Check out a comment on an article about it, "The statistic came from a question in which the people were told to label the U.S., and were given no credit if they forgot to mark Alaska and Hawaii as part of the U.S."
Now if the question were about the geographical locations of other countries...I bet many Americans would screw that up, including me on some things.
I KNOWD WER I WUZ B0RNDED.

It's a video of Yakko's World from Animaniacs where he sings and points out the countries of the world.
I have a habit of using subversive video links because I think discovery is more fun, but I can understand your desire to not click on it without some kind of description.

Actually, if I remember correctly, the 20% figure was skewed WAY up because of the testing methods they used. The actual number was something like 4% couldn't find where the US was on a map.
If I can find the actual studies on this I'll link 'em.

4% is still sad, should be 0%.

From Final Report of the National Geographic-Roper Public Affairs 2006 Geographic Literacy Study. I'll admit that my math is rusty, but I think the correct figure is nearer 6% than the 20% quoted by the idiot guy.
And as far as I can tell (I checked into this back when that Miss Carolina stuff was current) there's no scientific basis for the 20% figure. Certainly nothing authoritative or published.

I thought it was something about when they did the assessment, they didn't count people who forgot to include Alaska and Hawaii when asked to identify the US. Personally, it wouldn't immediately dawn on me to explicitly point out anything other than the continental US.

Vidar: Thanks for the link to that Peters Map. That's so cool! And it makes more sense to me, in a human geography class, to use that map.

Yeah, I've seen the Gall-Peters projection before. Makes the US look tiny. But it is an area-accurate map. It's pretty interesting.
When I saw the Miss Carolina stuff, I knew the 20% figure had to be fake. Thanks for clearing that up, Rich.

I agree 4% is still high. If you live in the U.S. you should at least know where we are in relation to the rest of the world.
