I know my comments are way over a year when you first posted this, but I want to add the following points anyway:
1. the very definition of a "good college" necessarily varies from perspective
2. guidance counselors and parents may use this list and perhaps steer a high school student on a path they would not have considered or the other extreme, supporting a uni that does not offer what the student actually wants or needs
3. I sincerely wish alternatives to uni education were as well publicized as this; people aged 17 - 18 need to know all life path alternatives and in many cases, that does not include college immediately.

I agree 100% with what you say, auburn, but unfortunately, not everyone does. There are few of us who enjoy learning and college for what it is - most students are there because society requires a good education to get a good job. Non-traditional paths, while surely better for certain students, will often yield questions regarding the future job-seeker's lack of motivation/commitment/clear foresight/you-name-it.
I guess my point is that U.S. News & World Report's #1 is not everyone's #1, but for many on the path to traditional jobs & such, it's necessary to do what makes you most desirable to an employer, regardless of what's best for you.
