This is not a new trend, but it shocked me all the same. I recently developed this site for the web department of PR Design and, not to blown my own trumpet, it got some pretty good recognition with CSS galleries. It seems someone else quite likes it too. I was checking my Google Analytics and this link came up. Can you see a slight resemblance? Or is it me? Please gimme some advice! I've contacted Freewebs, asking them to pull the plug on his account but is there anything else I can do?

Thanks, Harry

Not sure I'd class that as a proper rip. Yeah they've swapped out the logo but all the forms and email links lead back to you. Any traffic it gets potentially earns you money.

Anyway. Contact freewebs and inform them of the copyright infringement. I doubt they'll fight you.

Oli, yeah I realised that. I've calmed down a bit now lol. But I think he may be going to alter it all to suit him...

That happened to me recently. Some guy did exactly the same thing, I noticed (he didn't remove the links) and sent him an email, telling him I know what he's doing and I don't like it, etc... He ignored the email and slowly modified it into a new site. Same structure, same HTML and CSS base, just different look.

Well someone's given me a great idea. As he's hotlinking my files, I ought to change one image to a pic reading "I stole this site from web.prdesign-studio.co.uk, go and take a look if you don't believe me."
Can't wait to do that one!

Or you could do the same and use shock pictures. I used to do that.

I'm not sure what the other guy is trying to accomplish, since he even left your copyright info on it. Maybe just keep your eye on it, and if he starts adjusting it for his own use, then take action. He might just be using it to learn how you built your site.

you can do that with a local copy, no need to upload.

good point, vidar.

@Vidar: Goatse? lol.

I'll keep an eye guys, cheers :)

Harry

Its down now. I guessed freeweb did pull the plug

Yeah they did, thankfully :)

I've heard this excuse plenty 'o times. "But I was just studying your code, I wasn't planning on making it visible to the public."

Ugh this is frustrating. Mine was recently ripped too. Just wondering, but is there any way to prevent this type of thing from happening?

My old site design was ripped multiple times. I really wasn't offended by it. I was actually kind of flattered. As long as they're not hot-linking my images, I don't really care.

veckd: You can prevent hotlinking by using .htaccess: http://altlab.com/htaccess_tutorial.html

31Three.com get's ripped off just about every month. In fact I wrote an article about it a few months ago. You might try asking them how they deal with it. They've had some bad ones.

I saw this quote on Zeldman.com (by Rudyard Kipling):

"They copied all they could follow, but they couldn’t copy my mind. So I left them sweating and stealing, a year and a half behind."

As long as it doesn't hurt you in any measurable way, let the losers knock themselves out. Of course if it does, then it's time to take action.

Speaking about sites getting ripped.

Your logo reminds me of something...

@kris860911: That really is coincidence lol. Never seen that logo before - and I don't really even like that style. It was an experiment of sorts. I'm not going to use it much longer, need to re design a nice one :)

lol. No worries mate.

Don't mean to nag, but so you know, it looks wrong in the Opera browser.

I'm glad you're redoing that logo... I had to look at your URL to figure out what it said.

#1 rule of logo design (at least how I was 'learned') LEGIBILITY LEGIBILITY LEGIBILITY.

Yeah, agreed. We're toiling a few concepts for a new one.
