I've been self-employed for a couple of years now, and have found that there are certain typefaces that act as 'pillars' in my collection. Ones you can always rely on.
It'd be great to know what you think, and whether you'd add or remove from this subjective list (in alphabetical order):
1/ Akzidenz Grotesk
2/ Avenir
3/ Bodoni
4/ Caslon
5/ Clarendon
6/ Franklin Gothic
7/ Frutiger
8/ Futura
9/ Garamond
10/ Gill Sans
11/ Gotham
12/ Helvetica
13/ Univers
If you're not sure what they look like, I've published a few images in a blog post, with a brief background on each.

Avenir for sure, designed my site around that font. I've been trying to get my hands on Avenir Next forever now.

Am I the only designer who just goes through font libraries looking for fonts that work?
I've heard of about half those fonts but can only remember using Gill Sans. Maybe it's because I've never spent any time studying fonts and typography properly - and I'm sure I've made technical errors - but I don't see why I would need any of these. Am I missing some big designer secret that they taught on the one sick day I took at University?

BinaryMoon: I typically filter through as many fonts as I can, take note of the ones I like, and then go back and pick and choose from that list.
David: Please tell me why I like Garamond so much? Other people seem impartial to it, but I think I've just become sick of seeing Times New Roman and Arial thrown all over the place and enjoy the change...

No secret, Ben, and 'need' is the wrong word (just something I used in my blog post for added effect).
I think that designers should be aware of these, at least, as they're very well designed, and suitable for a wide range of uses.
Barto,
Why do you like Garamond so much? ;)
Jeff,
Gonna check out your site now.

@David: I was asking you! Perhaps you could look into some of the intricacies of more of those fonts and define what is likable about them and what is different / dislikable about them?

@BinaryMoon ... no you are not alone my friend. I do the same thing. there are some oldies but goodies yet, they don't fit every design. So I'm right there with you. I would hope that over the past 14 years of me collecting 500megs of fonts that I can find something that works for just about any design :)
gotta love font management software!

I have a billion fonts and I too look for the one that works.
I feel limiting myself to a tiny palette of "workable" fonts makes my work look boring and template-ish.

David - I guess that's fair enough then :)
I must admit I do quite like going on font hunts, but I don't really have any favorites. I just look for the one that fits.
Like xirclebox I have quite a stack of fonts in my collection so I can generally find something I feel fits well.

Good list. No Myriad? I love Myriad and have used it on several sites although I do try to diversify.

@BinaryMoon and @xirclebox I'm with you guys.
I'm not a professionals designer, so all I have is those fonts I've been collecting for years that comes with software and those that are for free.
So I have around 700-800 megs of fonts...
btw, What kind of font software do you use to manage all those fonts?
Haven't found "the one" yet for me...
