I'm on a Grid Server. It's been slow on two different internet connections, and I know they've had issues the last few days but this has been going on for more like 10. And it's never been as quick as other hosting companies I've used.

So anyway, I need to upgrade to a dedicated or dedicated virtual for my client stuff sometime. It's not urgent, but I do need to start thinking about it. Will the (dv) base be better than the (gs) is basically what I'm asking. It's a good price but it's not so good if sites take 20s to load.

My priorities are:
* Speed - these sites are very niche and won't get high traffic unless I come up with an F1 driver, but if Ron Dennis comes looking he better not be waiting to find out what he wants to know!
* Easy management - I'd like it to be as easy as (mt)'s control panel, and I'd like to not need SSH to use Ruby.

My Grid Server account is running very slow for me as well - a client had to text me last night as he thought his site had gone down; and I later found out (mt) are having trouble...

Do you know how many people they put onto one Grid?

Can you identify the bottleneck?

Eg is the web server or the database servers? I'd make a basic .htm page and see how speedy that is and compare it with one that does a few dozen database transactions.

If it's the webserver they're probably overloading the grid and if it's the database side of things, they need in improve that. Either way, find out and tell them because you shouldn't need to upgrade on a low-traffic site.

Yep, seems to be database + FTP but not HTML. I don't know if I'm on the cluster that's having problems, but whois.sc says there are 217 others on my server. Is that a lot?

I cancelled my MT account recently and got a VPS server for the same price. 512MB dedicated RAM (burstable to 768MB), 10 gigs space, 200 gigs bandwidth, delicious root access, and complete flexibility.

My problem with MT is that they're an extremely hyped company, and my experience with them was sub-par. The support was slow once you actually had your account, the Subversion support was abysmal, and they attempted twice to trick me into paying for another service instead of actually, you know, consulting the problem.

Before migrating to the grid, I enjoyed MT a lot. Everything was fast and great. But since I've gone grid, everything has been slow (ftp, ssh, web). I have taken it up with them, but it's been going on for months and I'm getting tired of it. After a few months of complaining, they did do something that seemed to improve things a bit, but I think it's still below what it should be. I am thinking about switching to a different host unless they do something about it.

I too have some issues with MT. Their control panel is the best I've found though. And the new iphone control panel is nice as well.

Anyone else know of a shared-host plan with as nice of a control panel?

The Grid server has been a nightmare for Media Temple. They're pretty fair about acknowledging it though at least though. Their best bet is the dedicated virtual stuff though too, in my opinion.

This is interesting, I'm looking for new hosting and was considering MT Grid server precisely because i was tired of the slow ftp, ssh and web performance of my current host. Could people please give me some advice on solid hosting within the price range of the MT grid server ($20/month). Thanks.

I have over 20 sites hosted at Media Temple. I can't say enough about their service - in the end, it's very good. Almost any host, at one point or another, is going to have an issue. To (mt)'s credit, they at least acknowledge any issue and work quickly to resolve it.

The grid system was a transition, and with anything like that you're going to have teething problems. That said, they've got that ironed out and I haven't had ANY issues with them for the last year. I have no ties or economic interest in saying this:

Go with Media Temple.

I'm still finding it pretty slow and I'm thinking of going with eleven2, anyone got an opinion on their shared hosting?

web hosting is a never ending problem, you'll chase your tail for ever on this one.

We've been on MT for years and there have been ups and downs but overall the service is solid and dependable.

All hosting company's will flame out at one point or another and unless you monitor your own site (with your own eyes not some monitoring "service") a lot of the time you won't even notice it.

Don't get caught up in hopping from one service to another, you'll just give yourself a lot of work for no reason. Ask Matt Brett!

What database are you running? The built-in database is slow. The MySQL version is far faster.

I have tried several hosts! I know any host will have a down time sometimes! but Above all this.. I think Dreamhost is better and it has good speed! I have one account there and one account servage.net

If any one of you guys need coupons for them than you can ask.

regards

Me? I'm using MySQL, I just do what WordPress tells me.

Possibly stupid question: If I have functions on my pages but they're in an If statement where the condition isn't met they don't load do they?

Conditional stuff shouldn't execute or show if conditions aren't met.
