As Wired spirals ever more down the toilet, in terms of design, all we can ask is what the f*** happened here?
I emailed them a few months back to ask what the hell was going on and the reply was that the design was just the first stage in its re-development and things were about to get great.
Yet here we are, still a muddle of hideous layout issues, dodgy line spacing, pointless spacer graphics and broken links (their entire China photo story from yesterday was fubared for ages).
You've got to wonder if the whole thing is just a massive piss take and just how soon will the creative director get his/her ass fired for screwing up, what was, a shining light in the online magazine stakes.
How the mighty have fallen!

I really think they are trying to hit a moving target. They have one of the leading and cutting-edge magazines out there so maybe they feel their website should be the same way, but in pushing the envelope they are forgetting to actually put anything in it. I don't visit the site anymore because I really can't read anything on there. It's not like it is hard to fix their problems, but they really don't seem to care to do so or maybe they are letting the interns take turns designing the thing.
If you decide to email them again, ask them to remove the beta label from their site. They are just publishing content and having a beta design for months doesn't fly.

I totally agree. Wired.com was one of my daily stops for years. Even after the redesign (which arrived in horribly-implemented stages), I still stuck around waiting for them to sort it out.
But now I check the site maybe once a week - if that. There's still good content to be had, but finding it is too unpleasant anymore.
I'm all for minimalist layouts, but being forced to pay attention to the top 4 or 5 stories they see fit to provide an image tag for and then looking at line after line after line of identically-formatted text doesn't work for a magazine.
I really don't like the way they do their "Latest blog posts" and "Most popular articles" below the fold. It's awful.
Thankfully the print version is still wonderful to look at.

I opt for "massive piss take", just because I like that description.
I haven't been over there for ages.
I thought I was the only one.
I guess not.

The magazine has undergone a redesign in the past few months and I think their print layout is one of the best I've seen on any magazine, a close second would be Seed Magazine. Too bad they canned Doug Bowman's great Wired.com design, they'll never be able to top that one.

I love the print edition. I read it anxiously whenever I find it in my mailbox. It's gorgeous and interesting.
The web site.. I've not visited in years. And oh dear god I just did!
And I ran away.
Fast.
Also, Vista is not the product of champions!

A few of the big news sites are rebuilding just now. The Guardian have, bizarrely, only redesigned their home page and CNN is doing a major overhaul, both far more aesthetically pleasing and practical than Wired.
Perhaps they are scared of all looking the same but big news sites should focus on clarity, ease of use and speed. Wired dropped the ball, fell down a hole, got trodden on by a troll and then things started to get REALLY bad!

I agree with previous comments: the print edition is my favorite magazine (wow, both content and design!).
I hadn't visited the site in a long time and I agree, it's not up to par. In fact, reading an article reminds me of reading a blog post. Sidebar with popular stories, comments, etc.
Can't we try a different look? ;)

I figured by now they would have fixed the glaring need for larger font in certain sections along with a bit of line-height, but alas...that just doesn't seem to be the case. For example if you check out the homepage and scroll to the latest blog posts section. It seems like the words are trying to either hump each other or gobble each other up.
