I very rarely have cause to find stock photography (and I'm not a designer, sorry) but when I do, I go to sxc.

It just seems better organised than anything else.

I have used sxc but I generally don't go the free route and use istock - not free but not expensive.

SXC blows so many people away.

I like SXC.hu as well - there is also yotophoto which searches all all sorts of photo sites for free/ public domain/ creative commons piccies

iStockphoto has some good choices.

Got to agree with everyone else. My first, and most likely only resource when I am looking for great stock shots for free is of course sxc. Thinking back now, I've probably been using them for at least 3 years now. If I'm in a bind and need a stock photo that I can't find there I've actually used their pay version stockxpert.
