I'm looking for a change of WordPress theme and want a 3 column design to base my modifications around.
I'm currently using Brian Gardner's Vertigo but am looking for something more like Derek Punsalan's Grid Focus.
A good friend is using Derek's theme so I don't want to seem like I'm copying.
Do you know of a clean, organised, easy-to-read three column theme?
I'm learning how to design my own but this might take some time (with work and being primarily a print designer).

K2 v0.9.6 now supports three columns out of the box. Just select Dual Sidebars from the theme options.
It can be both fun and terribly frustrating to modify, but it's pretty powerful as a framework.

I like the feel of Glued Ideas Subtle... I've used it before and it was quite fun to mess with.

Have a look at Newsportal 1.0
It's easily adjusted if there is a tiny little feature missing for you. It has four graphical elements; bottom of sidebars (shading) and a banner graphic, but these can simply be deleted in the style sheet if you wish.
What it lacked for me, and what I added: blog description, and previous/next posts with post titles.
It's widgets ready – and they work. However, they are not used on the blog in my profile yet (running 2.1.3 on that one). Using this theme across four sites, and one of them with widgets, and I haven't had any problems.
Again, download it, and look at the CSS, it's very clean!

I always liked the trisexuality theme, especially when people modify it nicely. I'm going over to three columns soon, and I'm going to be using a heavily modified Cutline base (as I am now).

I always like the 2813 Theme. Created by Elifoner and working off 9rules own Paul Stamatiou's 281 Theme. 2813 comes across as a minimal design, or no images or other distractions muddy the connection between the visitor and your content. Might be worth a few minutes of your attention.

I took this tutorial last week and made my own three column theme.

It is worth taking the lessons.
You will end up with a basic theme that you can edit.
Here is what I made and am using now:
