I have a client who has requested a 3D spinning logo. This is the sample site they gave for reference:
http://www.revolutionworld.com/
What program is used to create this effect? I have the logo in vector art. What next? Thanks for your suggestions!

I know there is a program for Flash that will 3D-ize a logo and let you play with it.
From first glance it looks like that's what they did here.
I don't use Flash but I recall a design professor of mine mentioning one about 4 years ago.

This was created in Flash.
The bigger question is WHY do they want a spinning logo?
1996 called and wants their idea back.

@peroty - *sigh* i know. do you know if this is a flash plugin of some kind? we have studio 8, but i've never noticed a 3D tool within flash. hince the reason we are looking to hire a full-time flash guru. ;)

hehe I know the feeling. I've built some monstrosities because the client wanted it.
I know there are a couple of Flash exporters to various things, I'm wondering if Adobe's LiveMotion is still around. Probably not since they own Flash now.
Can't help you. Flash boggles my simple mind.

That actually looks like poorly interlaced video.
It's a poor implementation but that's probably the best way to do it. Use a 3D animation program (3DSMAX or other) and make an animation of the logo spinning and export that to AVI. Transcode that into FLV and import that into your flash. Job done.
I did know a flash application that could turn 2D things into 3D and do effects like spinning... I'll look for it and get back to you. I should say now that it won't give you the gloss that rendering it properly will.

Aha. Swift3D was it but as I said, the effect won't be as grand. Using something like povray and going the video route would be cheaper too =)

And looking at fully and considering the amount of FLV video revolutionworld is using, I'm 99.9999% certain that's how they're doing the logo.

Yeah it's definitely done with something like 3DSM, It looks exactly like a really badly rendered AVI file... bad scan lines and everything. Swift3D will produce much crisper graphics, though without the cool chrome effect. Actually, Swift might be able to do something like that... it's been some time since I used it.

Thanks for your input Oli. I noticed that it had a video look to it, but I wasn't sure if that was due to the method of construction or an effect added to make it "look" like a video of the logo spinning. I am downloading Swift3D now to see what I can accomplish there. If anyone else has any suggestions, I am open to them all.

Well I would add that if you want really high quality output from Swift, you need to crank the polygon count way up and this increases the size of the output exponentially.
You really do reach a stage where the pre-rendered FLV is smaller than the Swift version, especially if you're only talking about a short animation. The longer the animation, the more advantage Swift has.

Thanks for the tip!

I am using 3d Studio Max (you can even get those nice reflections) for this sort of 3d rotation... I create the actual 3d model of the logo, and then create the 3d animation... I can create separate images for each frame or crate an .avi file... Then you can easily import it into Flash...
