You could live and breathe CSS. You could eat DOM and crap AJAX. You could be a true 2.0 guru, but you're going nowhere until you dress the part.
Let's be honest: big, fancy companies don't want to see a proven track record or third party testimonials... they want to see your slick ass all dolled up as if your torso was designed by Cameron Moll. That's the secret to landing any developer job nowadays.
Take this combo for instance. You've got your #fff dress shirt, striped with 3px #ccc padding and 1px #666 border. Mild, monochromatic contrast is totally 2.0.
Then, you swipe a background image from squidfingers for the necktie, because a tiled paisley pattern is the natural progression from the animated christmas light GIFs of yesteryear.
Look at you now... a walking beta release. Now go out there and overvalue yourself baby! There's money to be had in this here bubble!

Personally, I think these ties look a little sharper from a design aspect. That nasty looking tie used as a sample looks like something from the late 80's.

Great points. You have to look the part to be the part. The true aspect of 2.0 is functionality and interactivity though. We have always had design as an important area, but user contributed content and interaction is the true gem behind 2.0.
