Article19: She might not tank at all depending on how freaked out they have Biden on how he has to handle her so they won't all come out screaming sexism. She should be able to take hard questions and I don't anticipate she will answer them well (if they actually present her with any), but she is a charming women and she only needs to charm a few middle of the roader's who can be swayed easily and don't seem to care that she in a feather away from being president. Biden has only to have an attitude. Where i wish the debate will be about the issues I'm afraid it will be about the attitude.

"just accept it, lower taxes, better health care, more stable economy, people actually liking your country, maybe, no more war in Iraq, etc, etc."

I think you are looking far down the road for that, don't for a minute think all the problems from the last two terns are going to disappear overnight, if ever. It is going ot be a suck presidency for which ever candidate wins.

I also agree Pelosi has been a horrible speaker and has to go. She has no idea how to get people to work together, something she should have done to save the trillion dollar loss in the market after the bailout failed. a trillion dollar loss which cost hundreds of thousands of retirees or those near retirement a lot of their retirement money. Money they will not be able to recoup.

There are ways to do an emergency bail-out, and set it to be changed within weeks, and that bail-out should have been done. Congress put politics before something which they should have done. I think there are times when your elected officials have to ignore what you have to say because you don't know enough about it and this was one of those times.

I'd really like to meet your cat Article19.

Honestly... I would be ok with Obama in the White House if I knew Congress would not be in the hands of the Democrats.

It's not so much Obama that I have a problem with (I have plenty of objections with his personal politics) it's the forthcoming Ménage à trois of Obama/Pelosi/Reed that I don't look forward to.

I don't expect Obama's first term in office to be as uplifting as you expect it to be... and hey, if either of these men get in and DO fix things then more power to either of them, I'm just not going to be the one who is shocked when we're talking about the same crap in 2012 because it's stayed the same or gotten worse.

our cat could debate Palin on foreign/domestic policy and win hands/paws down. the interview with CBS was priceless. The whole ticket is nothing more than histrionics and lies.

The coming Palin debate train wreck is only going to make the tickets poll numbers tank even more, if she doesn't quit before then just to get out of it!

I'm gonna laugh at the reaction if it's the opposite of what the left is expecting. No matter HOW she performs your reaction will be the same. She could clean his clock and everyone will be as pissy and angry as they were the day before.

Part of me wants Obama to win so we don't hear endless drivel about racism and "stolen" elections for 4 more years.

I want a political leader that is skilled at multitasking. If North Korea makes movement in the nuclear sphere and simultaneously there are publicised investigations of horrible vet hospital conditions, the country has a horrific winter with the cost of oil, a part of Africa has a drought that millions are dying for lack of food and charter school national scores drop compared to inner city schools as well as the UN planning strategies about global warming and the Middle East in crisis------I want to know on a cellular level that my country has a leader that can respond to all of them. Not one of them. Not barging into folks already working on one of them.

The debate between two men that are going to end up running this country, with only a few weeks to go until that decision is made is certainly important.

He does this kind of thing all the time, ( Iowa's floods and Gustav) both of which when told to stay away from because it would cause chaos , even Republicans find it a bit appalling, but it still may work for him if the people believe it was not for political gain.

He also didn't really suspend his campaign, he brought his campaign staff to the White House meeting...Obama at least brought his Senate staffers not his campaign publicity people. I am guessing here, but I imagine if you are serious about doing your Senate work for your constituency you bring your Senate staffers, not your campaign staff.

I think he had no intention of not debating. This was just another ruse. One that may or may not work depending on the outcome of all these talks on the money.

I am interested in seeing the debate though originally I think it was supposed to be on foreign policy, so I'm not sure if they will still do that.

Right On --

All due respect, but I believe Mike's issue is with McCain suspending his entire campaign, not just putting off the debate.

I can agree with rescheduling a debate, but I think if you're a candidate with a real plan, now's the time to ramp up the campaign.

Especially since it seems like this might actually be a good thing in the long term...

I find it funny that while most people are yuckin it up at McCain's expense... folks like Bill Clinton are applauding him for focusing on the REAL issues.

I feel it DID come off as an attention grab but in all honesty, had Congress NOT come to a decision today and kept stalling I would have liked to know that Senators were more interested in doing their primary job than running for another office.

He wasn't backing out of a debate (in fact McCain was the one calling for MORE with Obama turning him down) he was wanting focus on the economy not partisan bickering debates. His stipulation WAS that he would prefer the debate be postponed had Congress not come to a conclusion by Friday. Odds are that the band-aid should be on by Friday so there really WASN'T a reason for all of this.

With all due respect, a debate is HARDLY an important issue...

"...I find myself wondering which candidate will be less damaging to our way of life, and I am not coming up with any answer...

So that's you in this boat with me.

As you say Mike, introducing politics in to this bailout discussion isn't a good thing. In that respect I can appreciate the spirit of what McCain is wanting to do. On the other hand though, if there's any job that requires great skills in multitasking and delegation, it's the President of the United States. In that regard, I'm in full agreement with Obama (and Letterman). Go do your duty, but let's not drop the ball on other important issues that still need addressing. That option won't exist once either one actually starts sitting in the big chair.

What weirds me out most is he wasn't in a bad position before this move. He wasn't in a great position, true, but this may very well cost him the election.

I really see this election as a non-election. It's almost October and I don't see anyone with bumper stickers. I don't see yard signs. Most people don't even seem to want to talk about it. I don't know if there are just a lot of people who have not made up their minds, or if we collectively just don't give a damn. As opinionated as I am, I find myself falling close to the latter category. I find myself wondering which candidate will be less damaging to our way of life, and I am not coming up with any answer.

@fuscom, good point regarding McCain vs. Republican strategy. Republicans are extremely good at *winning* at all costs and I think that this move by McCain smacks of a desperate attempt to become more relevant. And also, bringing the presidential campaign into the bailout negotiations will definitely do more harm than good IMO.

I too think it was a completely boneheaded move by McCain and his campaign, and I completely find myself in agreement with the sentiment expressed by David Letterman...

But let's not get this confused. This isn't a "republican" move, it's a McCain issue.

I too think this is a ridiculous move, and I don't see it as doing ANYTHING to help him. I'm sure the intent was "hey look, I care about the country so much that I'm gunna go do this instead of trying to be president." If that were the case... he'd withdraw.

No, this is just a tactic.

Perhaps one day, far in the future, our presidential choices will not be limited to a douche and turd sandwich.

I think I've now seen it all from the Republicans. They do whatever it takes to win, and this is just another low road they've chosen to drive down.

By now I'm sure you've heard that Senator McCain has suspended his campaign so that he can immediately get to D.C. and "help out" with the bailout proceedings.

He now feels that there's an extreme sense of urgency in D.C. surrounding the bailout, so much so that yesterday morning instead of returning a call to the Obama campaign regarding a joint discussion about the bailout, he met with Lady Lynn de Rothschild, a former Clinton backer that recently endorsed McCain.

He wants to expedite his trip back to Washington so much that yesterday he stayed in NY for a previously unscheduled interview with Katie Couric.

He's so incensed with the need to get back to D.C. that he's still attending the Clinton Global Initiative event in NY today before leaving.

And because it's so important to get to D.C. and work on the bailout plan, he's pulling out of the Friday night Presidential debate and his team has said that Palin's debate next week might be postponed as well.

So let me get this straight. Getting to D.C. to help with the bailout proceedings was so all-encompassing that he had to suspend his campaign, but at the same time he's meeting with wealthy supporters, giving unscheduled meetings, and attending events? Isn't the point of suspending his campaign so that he can get down to D.C. immediately and help out?

No, that's not the point. The point is that McCain is down in the polls, seen as weaker on the economy than Obama (by 10 points according to a recent Fox poll [PDF]) and needed to get back into the news cycle again in a way that shows him as a leader, so this is the stunt his campaign has cooked up. He hasn't done jack shit to help with the bailout thus far so what's with the sudden urgency, John?
