Suggestions are open for December's non-fiction book. Any topic, any field.

My suggestions:

Other suggestions are welcome. Decision will be made within a week (Nov 7, though I won't be here then so... someone else count the votes.)

I'm OK with any of these.

I'm up for any but Ending Aging, though I have to admit that, while not the typical nonfiction book club read, I would love to read The Elephants of Style, which has been on my wish list for a very long time!

I guess my official vote is for the grammar book (wow, I feel boring), but I'd be excited to read about Martin Luther King, Jr. or Nelson Mandela, as well.

I'll join you at the boring, geeky table, Erin, because that book on grammar sounds great. My vote is for The Elephants of Style.

Regarding the selections: I wanted to make sure that "non-fiction" didn't get pigeon-holed into being nothing but biographies. I figured "Fight Aging" was a good one, especially for the science-minded community (as well as anyone hoping to live for a long time), and as for the Elephants of Style... well, most of us are bloggers, right? Writing books do us good.

@Gnorb: Not that I'm unhappy with the choices for December, but why aren't there any history books in December's list? History books are non-fiction, you know. ;)

In all fairness, though, I realize that history books might turn off a lot of folks and some history books might require more than a month to get through. I can't remember how long it took me to crawl through Joachim C. Fest's Hitler, but it was a long while.

History books are non-fiction, you know. ;)

Pfft! Yeah, right. Until I hear it from the side that lost, that whole "History's written by the victors" thing has totally left a bad taste in my mouth.

In all seriousness, I just don't really know any good history books (other than my favorite series, "Don't know much about..." by Kenneth Davis (I think). Feel free to suggest some, though I had actually picked the MLK book for that very reason. Sure it's an "autobiography" (pulled together from his memoirs), but the civil rights movement in the US was also a rather important historical event.

@Gnorb: That's why you need to read LOTS of history books - to get multiple points of view. ;)

Regarding recommending some, that's kind of hard for me, truth be told. A lot of the stuff I'm interested in doesn't usually command much interest, other than from history geeks. For example, I really enjoyed Antony Beevor's Stalingrad: The Fateful Siege. Would you folks be interested in something like that?

If so, I'll have plenty of nonfiction recommendations for January. :)

Suggest it. Remember: voting threads are started by one person, but that doesn't mean that the choices are determined by them. For example, if you would prefer that over Elephants of Style, then by all means, suggest it or any other history book you desire for this month. Let the group decide.

I, for one, welcome our new historical overlords.

By the way, you know who also liked Stalingrad and history?

Nah, I'll wait until January to suggest a few; I'm actually hoping that Elephants win. :)

Regarding "By the way, you know who also liked Stalingrad and history?"... hah! I'm not familiar with Stalin's view of history, but one might say that Hitler liked his version of history; it's clear that he had, um, some facts a bit off.

That reminds me of a funny pic I saw in a forum a long time ago. It showed Hitler in a car giving the salute, with this text below:

"Hitler was a vegetarian, and stayed away from alcohol and drugs. Do your part to fight Fascism: eat meat, get drunk, and do drugs!"

Not sure why the history stuff reminded me of that particularly thing, but.. oh well.

How about Letters to a Young Teacher?

I heard the author interview on NPR and it sounds incredibly interesting; all about American public education.

Today's the last day to vote for this month's nonfiction book, so get your votes in!

Looks like "elephants of style" wins. Grab your copy today!
