Can someone please explain the appeal of Lil Wayne? The fact that he ever declared himself the "best rapper alive" simply astonishes me. I find everything he does so bad, I'm astonished anyone puts him on the radio.
Ever since he made an appearance on Destiny Child's "Solider" I've found everything he's put out annoying and his lyrics amateurish. Now I have to listen "Duffle Bag Boy", which is so bad I find it laughable.
Any insight on how he manages any airplay or record sales would be fascinating to me.

Can't say that I can explain his appeal. I also can't say that I totally dislike, though he's way far from one of my favorite artists. I think he shows some skill in rapping though, I've listened through a few of his mixtapes and have found a few gems.
Most of his stuff that hits the radio I don't like, mostly because I can't stand commercial rap, but he has some good tracks here and there.

To me he is a genius for how he presents himself. He comes out with great stuff and horrible stuff, but the fact he can create a fanbase around the fact that he is the greatest rapper alive makes him the genius that he is. Basically he is a metaphor/simile king. He uses them and then you go "hell that's pretty cool" and so then he follows that by saying how great he is and you almost start to believe it.
His good songs I really love and his bad songs I really hate. Jay-Z on the other hand I even kinda dig his bad songs.

I like his wordplay, how he mixes his metaphors, how he really goes way out there to pull together some symbolism.
