I have been thinking about company names for a couple of weeks now and trying to figure out which ones capture my attention. I don't mean the brand or what the company does, just the actual name of it. When I think about the old school companies before the web, no names really stick out, but web companies names seem to capture my attention.

  • Yahoo
  • Google
  • 9rules (oooo right up with the big dogs)

I'm not sure if you have to be a bit more creative now so you can get a good domain name, but being creative with the name just seems to be as important as everything else. I would love to start a list of creative company names (not sites, actual companies) so if you find any please list them here.

There is a hardwood floor place near me called "Long Hardwood", apparently the owner's last name is Long.

I think skinnyCorp is a pretty awesome name, as well as Connected Ventures.

Not sure why, but the first company I thought of was not web related at all (weird, I know), it was Shell.

I especially love the Tony Curtis / Marilyn Monroe quote from "Some Like it Hot".

It's on account of these shells. That's my hobby.

You collect shells?

So did my father and grandfather. You might say we had a passion for shells.
That's why we named the oil company after it.

Shell Oil?

Please, no names. Just call me Junior.

It's just a weird name for an oil company, but it sticks. No one raises an eyebrow over it.

Some people do not think their names through before they set them in stone... that "Long Hardwood" one is a GREAT example.

Haha, I just clipped an article the other day about bad domain names lol. Pays to think things through, write it out, etc.

Shell does stick with you. Xerox is kind of cool.

We (used to? not sure) have an ISP called Skynet here in Belgium — just like the evil "revolutionary neural net-based artificial intelligence" in Terminator that took over the global computer network and ruled the world.

No wait, that's Google.

Anyway, there's a cool Skynet tee here.

Shell is great.

Some others:

Cyberdyne Systems
Mordor (more of a non-profit really)
Wang (who can say that and not giggle?)

The first thing that came to mind was Coke. Yeah, I know it's actually Coca Cola and all, but Coke just has a nice druggy ring to it.

Oh wait, is Coke actually a company? :\
