Do you link back to someone who links your blog?

If you give a link to someone's blog, do you expect in return that they'd link your blog back as a favor? Or does it not bother you. What's your personal take on the returning or not returning of links.
I hope that if I link someone, that they'd at least check out my site and maybe return the favor. I mean, it's fair. But if someone wants to link my site and I don't link theirs, I'd only link it if I really liked it. I know it's kind of lopsided, but that's how I see it.

Why would you implicitly expect a link back from a blog you've linked to?
I don't see much value in saying to my readers "go and look at this blog". If I'm going to link to something, I'll usually link to a particular document to demonstrate what I'm talking about.
But no. I never expect somebody to link back to me. It's nice if they do but that's not the point of my outbound link.

I don't "expect" a link back to someone's site. A comment would be nice.

Good question!
If I link to someone else's blog, I really don't expect a link back. (Stephen Fry, for example, does not appear to have a link to my blog on his blog - YET). But it is always nice when it happens.
If someone links to my blog, I always at least check out their blog. If their stuff doesn't grab me right away, I subscribe to their feed for awhile so I can check back every now and then. When someone links to my blog, I assume it's because we have common interests, so I want to make sure I'm not missing anything!

The blogs I link tend to be ones that I think people reading my site would either really enjoy or are good resources. So to me whether they give me a link back is a moot point, just having the link to them is a benefit to me/my readers.
That being said if I see an incoming link from another site that has me as a link, whether its something I would link back I still try to thank them for the link as a common courtesy. After all, something drove them to link to me, I can only hope it was because they really liked my site.

No, I don't expect a link back if I link to a site. If someone links to my blog, I will check it out, and thank them.

I don't expect, but always appreciate a link back.
It's up to the other blog's owner to decide whether my content is really worth linking back to, so it's also a good sign when I see a link back. I then now that I did very well on this particular post.

I certainly don't expect anything, except maybe a glance at my site. The blog owner can decide whether or not my site is of enough interest to merit a link of its own.

I don't automatically link back. I link to someone because I like their blog or because they're an active part of my blog.

Not at all and don't expect it either.

Yeah a link back would be a great bonus but as one comment already says i only link to pages to support an argument, show an example or just generally when im talking about something.

Like roro and most everyone else seems to have said - a link to my blog will guarantee a visit from me and a poke around. Unless I view what you've written with hatred and loathing, I'll most likely subscribe to your feed, at least for a bit, till I get a proper feel for your site.
If you're lucky you might even get a comment or two from me (though don't hold your breath as I rarely comment - bad Cas).
Will I link back to your blog however? It isn't a straight quid pro quo. The people who read Bright Meadow are a picky lot and tend to follow the links I give them. No, I'm not being big headed, it's the truth. If I sent them to a site that was not worthy of their time/attention, I'd get it in the neck! So I will only link to sites that I think truly deserve it and will interest my readers.
This doesn't mean I don't think your blog is the bees knees. I am sure it rocks the world on a regular basis. Please bear in mind I read an awful lot more blogs and sites than my readers know about - I am very picky about who I link to, choosing only links that will interest everyone and/or illustrate a point I'm trying to make.
In summation, the only way to get a link-back out of me is to write kick-ass content that grabs my attention on a regular basis. But then if you're writing such great content, you're not going to need my one little link to rocket you to fame and the recognition you deserve - everyone's going to be linking to you!

I always thank via email message if someone links to me - even if it contrary minded to what I am saying. I don't always link back to them. However, if their content is good and 'fits' into the content on my blog, I will add them to my blogroll.

I've come to expect that when I make a good link to a valuable site to my readers, I get something in return.
I did a video review of BlogRovr and those guys loved it so much they send me all kinds of traffic from snippets they typed out from the video.
#1 is to link to good things that get people hooked on your picks and coming back for more.
#2 is just a bonus, but they usually find a way to link back or come and comment with thanks if you do a good job reviewing them.

Well, that is lopsided.
And no, I don't think that someone should link back to me just because I've linked them. Usually when I link out it's just to mention something cool I have found, or to show something of interest, or demonstrate what I am talking about. I never expect to be linked back just because I linked to them first.
And vice versa, if someone does link to me I check out their site, leave a comment if one seems fit, and that's it. Unless I find something really cool, or useful to link back there is no action on my part.

I'm not sure I expect people to link back to me if I link to their blog, because in my mind the purpose of using the link in the first place was to add value to my readers.
On the other hand if someone links to my blog, if I can use their blog to again add value to my readers I will certainly choose to link back to them over another blog.

It's nice to have some kind of acknowledgment, but I don't lose and sleep over it. You can't possibly expect every blog to link back to yours.

definitely don't expect it. I actually like roro's solution of subscribing for a little while to see if there are things you find interesting. I'm going to try that moving forward!

If a site linked to me and I thought it might be of interest to my readers I would, but I wouldn't do it as a matter of course.
It's best to link to people without any expectation that the gesture will be returned.
Reciprocal linking won't do your search engine ranking much good anyway, if that's what concerns you.

Well I'm of the opinion that if someone links to me and I know about it, I will at least check out their site. If it turns out that I really like it, the fact that they've already linked to me means yes, probably I will link to them.
But then nobody links to me anyway ;)

The sites I link are my favorites, but I don't expect them to link me.
If I want a reciprocal link, I'll just ask

If someone links to me I always check out their site. But if I link to someone then that's my choice and I don't expect reciprocal arrangements. If I refer to another blog in an entry that's just to illustrate a point I'm making, but I wouldn't just say this is a great blog or whatever. I feel I'm expected to make a comment and something more in depth.

I think it's considered good blog etiquette to link back to folks in the form of a post if they link to you from a post. But if someone adds me to their blogroll I don't necessarily add them to mine.

You should never expect it, but it is good blog karma to link something back to those who link to you. I almost always do, unless it's spam.
