I've always been into graffiti and fascinated at how awesome some of it looks. I'm curious to know peoples opinions on whether or not you think graffiti is art.

I find it hard to imagine that something like this can be thought of as anything else but art.

When I was a kid, I got a Commodore 64 when they first came out. Along with this, I had my first 'graphic software' - Print Shop. Also, I had a Koala Pad. I loved it! So much easier to use than a keyboard. But, at that time, we did not have a mouse either.

Now, I have gotten used to using a mouse with Photoshop.

This past week, I broke down and went and got a Intuos3 4x6 Wacom Tablet from Best Buy. Now that I have it at home and installed, it is taking me a while to get used to it. I have gotten so used to using a mouse, this almost seems foreign to me.

I have read through many of the tutorials on Wacom's site and other tips and tricks I have found on the internet. I guess time will tell!

Does anyone else use a Wacom Tablet ? What model? How did you get used to it after using a mouse?

The blogging world is fascinating but I don't quite have the hang of it. Note the topic that I posted back in November last year that went nowhere.

Recently I've become interested in a new topic. I had occassion to restore a painting completed by a woman artist in 1901 to her great grandnephew and wrote about it in my blog: kozachekart.blogspot.com
I had come across the painting, of all places, on top of a pile of hedge trimmings near a public park. What question it prompts is what will happen to our artwork generations removed from our present lives?

I found Wryb's You Tube movies the other day. Movies of him drawing. Awesome!

Have you ever sketched your own face? I did mine several months ago. it is not a good work with quite a number of noticeable errors. As you can see, some are even first draft errors.Nevertheless, I am satisfied to have finally done a self-portrait after a lapse of fourteen years .

The following is my portrait:
`

I chanced upon a gallery of shock art and was very much offended by the content. There is nothing aesthetic in it except for horror, perverseness and insanity. Have you ever heard of Joel-Peter Witkin? His works, which centre on the themes of death, torture and transgressions of nature, can easily make one pale and shaken with the images of decapitated corpses, broken limbs, spilling intestines and any thing revolting under the sun.

Although some may find shock art thought-provoking by contending that the appreciation of beauty is arbitrary, I find its presence in the art world unnecessary and should therefore be discouraged.

What do you think of it?

Images of Artists and Intellectuals in the Popular Media

For a long while, I have noticed a dissappointing trend in the popular media regarding images of artists and intellectuals. I rarely see artists in television and film and when I do, they are often depicted as misanthropic misfits.

Recently, I attended a conference in South Carolina on the Business of Being an Artist during which some recent public opinion results on the arts and artists were discussed. According to one public opinion poll, 75% of the public polled said that they did not respect artists. (Ironically, 75% also said that they desire art in their lives!) I am wondering if there is a relationship between the media representation of artists and public opinion.

Is there anyone interested in cultivating a better public image of artists?
I discuss some of this, albeit tongue-in-cheek on my blogsite: kozachekart.blogspot.com. I have been reading Richard Hofstadter's book, "Anti-intellectualism in American Life" to get an historical overview on the subject and have found it truly enlightening and fascinating. The book was originally published in the 1960's but it is such a classic that it is worth a second look. I would like to know what current texts others might be reading on this topic.

I'm sure many of you read about this in the papers, but for those who didn't it's the story of a woman from Newcastle (Northern England) who erected a 5ft spike in her front garden and she threads all her junk mail through it. She has hopes that once it's complete it will be displayed in an art gallery.

My question: should this or should this not end up in a gallery?

I'm curious how other artists go about the process of creating works. A lot of people tend to stereotype artists as being chaotic, unorganized and generally bad at planning things out. I fall somewhere between that and being very organized and planning.

When you create artwork, do you plan far in advance (if so, how and to what extent?), or do you find you can only create as the mood strikes, and with no planning?

I find I plan sometimes, but my best work is usually the work that is little-planned.

Los Angeles has a pretty bad reputation in terms of culture. Some of this rep, admittedly, is earned. But LA is the entertainment capital of the world. There are a lot of art museums throughout the greater Los Angeles County area, some great, some, well, not so much. These best art museums in Los Angeles are a good way to start discovering that LA is more than just drunk starlets and celebutantes stumbling out of late-night clubs on the Sunset Strip.

And then there's the Walt Disney Hall, etc etc. Any other spots in LA that prove there IS culture out here?

It shouldn't surprise those who know me that I'm robotic/mechanical art projects mesmerize me. Here are a selected few I've come across, which are simply incredible. Please share if you know of others!

Ferrofluid is "a liquid which becomes strongly polarised in the presence of a magnetic field" (Wikipedia). It's simply stunning to look at and even feels alive. If anyone has a DIY for making ferrofluids, drop me a line ;)

I recently featured Daniel Rozin's mechanical mirror on my site, but couldn't in good conscience post this note without including the video. It's a mirror without any glass — a computer vision system watches the environment and provides input for the mirror itself: homespun basket-like belts driven by motors. The belts are multicolored and align themselves to match observed patterns.

U-Ram Choe's organically inspired machines have been a personal favorite of mine ever since I first came across his videos earlier this year. The vertebrae and head shapes of his machines are simply stunning, and fit perfectly to my own taste and style. [His site]

Psychoneurotic Poetry

I just read this and found it incredibly deep. It's a poem by Psychologist Kazimierz Dabrowski (1902 - 1980).

Be greeted psychoneurotics!

For you see sensitivity in the insensitivity of the world,
uncertainty among the world's certainties.

For you often feel others as you feel yourselves.

For you feel the anxiety of the world, and
its bottomless narrowness and self-assurance.

For your phobia of washing your hands from the dirt of the world,
for your fear of being locked in the world’s limitations.
for your fear of the absurdity of existence.

For your subtlety in not telling others what you see in them.

For your awkwardness in dealing with practical things, and
for your practicalness in dealing with unknown things,
for your transcendental realism and lack of everyday realism,
for your exclusiveness and fear of losing close friends,
for your creativity and ecstasy,
for your maladjustment to that "which is" and adjustment to that which "ought to be",
for your great but unutilized abilities.

For the belated appreciation of the real value of your greatness
which never allows the appreciation of the greatness
of those who will come after you.

For your being treated instead of treating others,
for your heavenly power being forever pushed down by brutal force;
for that which is prescient, unsaid, infinite in you.
For the loneliness and strangeness of your ways.

Be greeted!

Roadsigns of the Web (Icon Give-Away)

A while back I created some humorous icons depicting some ideas and activities associated with the web, resembling roadsigns. I decided to give them away today and wanted to share them with my fellow 9rulers. By give-away I mean I'm releasing them into the public domain.

Not sure if anyone can really use these. I've been using them myself for spicing up entries when I don't have a picture to go with an article. But anyway, you can download them here, and here's a preview of the whole set (the actual icons are higher-rez and don't include the labels):

I'm making a 12" high, 24" wide poster. What resolution (dpi, ppi, etc.) would be best to print at? I'm not looking for super-high quality, but I didn't think the standard 72 dpi would suffice.

Your Deviant Art experience.

So I finally did it. After FOREVER of avoiding the “snobby” Deviant Art, I finally had to go in and create an account so I could download a photoshop brush that I wanted.

I first stumbled across deviant art in 2005 when I was searching for something that I can no longer remember. I had a browse long enough to realise that a lot of these people were artist snobs. Kind of like how at uni, the film students were snobs. The photograph students were snobs. And most of the people in my unit were snobs because they thought they were doing the best shit ever.

I’m always cautious around these types: artists (painting, drawing, photography, writing, designing), fashionistas (models, people who fucking read cosmopolitan and think they know everything about fashion, anyone in that industry) and the australian web industry association and their incestuous committee. Why? Because they think they are so good then everyone else and believe that what they say is the standard in their industry. That is why I was scared of Deviant Art in the first place.

I realise that some people like to verbally bash others (imdb.com boards. have fun) about their art and that is so horrible. Art is something that you create with your heart and soul - or possibly because you have to because there was no other subject you wanted to do at school - it’s not right or wrong, good or bad. Okay, it might be good or bad. I make things all the time that I think are horrible and I don’t finish with them until I make them awesome or give up completely. But there should be some tact in critique. There is nothing worse then someone who slings out insults cleverly disguised as constructive critiscim.

So I’ve added some of my latest web designs in there and turned off the comments. But then I thought, bring it on dears. Let me see what you have. I know not everyone at Deviant Art is an asshole, but man I’ve seen some brutal shootings on gallery pages and it’s not nice at all. I decided to be brave and turn on the comments anyway. Who cares what they say? I know they are good and that’s why I put them up there.

Have you guys had any deviantART experiences?

3D Crop Circles

I've always thought crop circles are awesome. Both in that they look great, involve a unique style, and, they have caused so many people to imagine something supernatural or alien causing them (have to give credit for that, it's funny).

Here's the Daily Mail writing on a new kind of crop circles, 3D Crop Circles to be specific. These new kinds don't only show simple 2D geometric shapes when seen from a bird's eye view — but 3D shapes. Pretty damn cool.

The picture they show in that article is of a corridor. Ironically, people are already saying "...this circle represents the passageway through the physical world to the divine world".

Looking over the How did you learn to draw thread and seeing so many 9Rules answer — it got me intrigued!

Show off your favorite sketches, if you have'em. I'll jumpstart the thread, here are a few done in 2004.

First one was a play of cyber/bony robots. An experiment for the most part.

This one I did right after a trip to Venice, Italy. Every other shop there sells really cool masks — hence, the masked man below.

I haven't done much on paper lately, but my girlfriend gave me a Wacom Tablet christmas '05 (awesome, awesome gift). I haven't had time to master the tablet like I was going to — it's amazing what the professional concept artists can do with Photoshop and a tablet. But here's one of my attempts, done in Photoshop:

Share yours! :-)

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about the new CS3 suite that Adobe released a short while back and he asked to see something I had done in Illustrator because he simply cannot figure out how to use the program.

I was curious as to how many Illustrator freaks we have here and what you can do with it.

I don't think I'm AWESOME at it as I've seen FAR better work with it but hey there's always something better.

As we know art comes in many different forms, but this is one that I would have never imagined. It's called Spit Art and done by one of the guys over at Pimply Wimp. It's fascinating how fast he can "spit" the concept so that it is completed before the water even dries.

There is almost no value to doing something like since it won't last forever, but his ability to scale up his images to sizes that require him to walk around to complete will never stop amazing me.

So here's the idea, a game/challenge of sorts.

Each month, you are to compose a desktop from a variety of images, composite and all, and share it with us. None of this who's is the coolest thing, just a cool art/photo/image thing to do with our desktops. Pick any theme, any pictures (SFW preferably), and any type of composition. Upload it, post it, love it.

We're coming up on the 2007 May Fest here in Tulsa and they just 'unveiled' the poster for this year.

May Fest is a street festival that focuses on artwork and art related crafts.

My problem with the poster is that to me, it reads May Fast because of the use of a triangle around the E.

Am I nuts or does it read like that to anyone else?

Fewer Senses = More Creativity?

I recently lost my sight for a week and, while it was a difficult time, it was also interesting creatively. I had dreams and enjoyed music in ways I hadn't before. (More on the experience here.)

That got me thinking: Is there a connection between limiting your senses and increased creativity? I know there's a tradition of limiting the medium (the chiptune scene being a recent example), but what about disabling your senses directly? What impact do you think it might have? Have you tried it yourself? Are there any famous cases of it?

Friday Animation Extravaganza! (epileptics need not view)

It's Friday! It's Friday afternoon no less!
And that means it's time for fun!

And by fun, in this case, I mean "make silly animations and post them to this note!

I will award points to those who make me laugh hardest!

But first, 2 rules and a preference.

RULES
1. Must be an animated GIF! We rock it old school, no flash or video.
2. Must be funny.
3. Take all the time you want. There's no time limit on this one.

PREFERENCE:
1. Use yourself. If you can. :D

<img src="http://arcticpalace.org/images/photodump/sippingtwostep.gif">

How to make a silly animation of yourself!

1. Take a picture of yourself
2. Take a second picture of yourself, moved slightly.
3. Repeat photos until content.
4. Use ImageReady or any other animation program that will let you select a different picture for each frame.
(Glickr looks simple to use, but it's blocked from work so I'm going on screenshots on another site)
Or you can use Gifninja! and upload a couple of pictures, select how fast you want it to move, and hit go. :)

5. Save the image as a GIF.
6. Upload it, sit back and enjoy the silliness.

I hope this helps.
