Hey guys, sorry for the quality of these pictures, I had to take them really quickly as I was getting it activated.
First Impressions:
- Very solid feeling, slightly heavier than I thought it'd be
- Packaging is nice, not as high-tech as the new iPod nano packaging, but still pretty slick. Comes with power adapter, cradle, USB, "Finger Tips" picture manual, and microfiber cloth to wipe the screen
- Activation through iTunes is insanely fast, I couldn't believe it. Make sure to upgrade to 10.4.10 and the new version of iTunes though first
- Home button on bottom is an actual button that clicks and goes down, not a touch-button as I thought. This is actually a lot better IMO.
- 30 seconds later and my phone number has switched to the new phone! I can't believe it!

Dude, is that a Dell?
Ok, not trying to hijack the thread...just thought that was interesting in your Flickr photo.
Back on topic, sorta. Given all the build up posts to you announcing you were going to the mall, then at the mall, then actually saving money, and then "GOT IT!" This post seems kinda...blah.
I cant rightly judge your opinion though, so I'll just ask straight out -- was it worth half a day at the mall and $600+ smakeroos (or at least the trade-ins you mentioned earlier)?

hthth: hot. That's all I can say. This phone is so sick, it should be criminal. I'm going to go fool with it some more. I'll write more of a review in the AM.

Looking as sweet as advertised -- I'd love to have one, but I'm going to wait it out until the second version (mostly due to cell contract frustrations)
@ryanarrowsmith: with a case?

Is anyone else having syncing issues with their itunes? It keeps saying that my iphone is not connected.

Yes, I'm enjoying mine too. Question though. Does anyone else experience low volume from the other end. I always raised the volume in Settings and everything but whenever I receive a call, the person on the other line sounds distant. Any clue?

I haven't had any trouble with the synching or volume. I really wish they would have enabled Bluetooth synching for Mac. It seems kind of lame to have to plug it in. Heck, even the new Nokia's synch via Bluetooth!

Jorge it sounded pretty good to me. I turned speakerphone on briefly and it was a little muffled (not as instantly loud as my Blackberry's speakerphone) but when I switched back to normal phone mode the person sounded a lot louder. Maybe try switching back and forth too?
Jon, syncing is a pain in the butt cause it won't let me manually sync, I have to deal with checkboxes of other checkboxes which sucks. Hopefully Apple will think of a better syncing interface in a software upgrade.

I figured out why the syncing was weird, for some reason when I switched out of the iphone tab in itunes while trying to sync it said it was not connected so I just couldn't try anything else in itunes while trying to sync.

There's one thing I've been wondering about that you guys might be able to shed some light on now. Is there some kind of general file handler/organizer included?
Or are all files organized from within each application, and presumably with a different interface for each app? In this case, does the Mail app allow you to browse through images to attach, or do you have to open iPhoto and from there click "Send as email" or something similar?

There really isn't any kind of file browser app which sucks, basically you use the apps on the phone to work with files. I was trying to get around this earlier today and was using the file:/// prefix in safari but it popped up a prompt saying it cannot open any local files.

Yes, I experimented with the head piece and the sound and quality sounds great and the same with speaker mode but not so much in the normal sense that you use a phone, and that is placing it to your ear. Again, it sounds distant but oh well.

Wow, this made my stomach hurt. They stress test a new iPhone by scratching it with keys and dropping it repeatedly.
The good news? The phone did beautifully.

What I found interesting was that when I talked to someone on a cellphone compared to a landline phone the quality was noticably better.

Chris Pirillo has an interesting rant about the iPhone. He challenges people to give legitimate reasons as to why they bought an iPhone. I personally have no remorse not buying one (even though it's time for me to upgrade my phone). Perhaps v2 but this one had too many drawbacks for me. I'm happy for all of you that bought one. :) I'm curious though, now that you've had some time to play with it, if any of you felt Chris was on target (although he is a heavy Microsoft product user - possibly moving to Apple products)?

Can anyone tell me how zippy it is on the internet?
The display ones were dragging ASS at the Apple Store and one of the clerks gave me a line about "they're rebooting the network".
Is it just as fast as a computer online or is it painfully slow like I experienced. My blog took THREE MINUTES to load on the iPhone in the store and 4 seconds on the iMac behind it.

I think it depends on location. At my house, I can load a page in about 3-5 seconds on Edge. Less on my wifi. Out south, it took about 5-10 seconds. But I've never had a serious lag like some people are reporting.
@Tyme: after about 3 days, still the best investment I've made in a long time. I was listing auctions on Ebay at lunch on Saturday. Today, on the ride in to work, I was watching Sin City. You have to look at the phone and see if it's worth it based on what you need. I just need a good phone and I'd like to listen to music on it. The maps, video, calendar, etc. are all gravy.
And the ease of use is absolutely unparalleled. I haven't typed a single number into it. You plug it into iTunes and your music, contacts, bookmarks and whatnot are automatically synched. It's a dream come true to me after years of retyping numbers on those tiny little screens.

It's not bad, here in Vegas I'm loading notes pages in about 15 seconds on Edge. It's not broadband for sure, but I can't complain. And, the Google maps widget seems to run surprisingly fast.

Tyme: I started watching about half of that video and I can't really listen to that guys annoying voice anymore. What's kind of annoying, is that so many people complain about the phone being over-hyped and then expecting it to be the end-of-all problems phone. Some of this guys' points are retarded, like "Do I want to make Jobs more rich?" Seriously? Would that really stop you from buying a phone?!
He also mentions that people are too excited about it. Who cares, hell I was excited about it too. You also see huge Star Wars fans dressing up like the characters and waiting overnight to see a two hour movie.
I personally don't regret spending one dime on it, and the whole experience was worth it. Before the phone came out, I was already a huge fan of mobile devices, so this one just fits my needs well. I also like well designed phones, which this is also. As Ryan said, the ease of use is priceless.
If people like their current phone, then cool, don't buy the iphone, it's simple. I'm just sick of people complaining about the iphone and trying to focus on it's negatives.........get over it.

@JPhill - so it's okay for people to gush about their phone but it's not ok to critique it? Chris has the right to voice his opinion just like the person who is overly enthusiastic about their phone.
Honestly, for those that have no interest buying the phone the only way to escape hearing about it on Friday was to walk away from the computer because it was everywhere. There are more people who didn't buy the phone that did and you didn't see us saying "get over it" whether you liked the phone or not. We endured it. And there will probably be another week of it.
It's just interesting how enthusiasts have all the patience in the world for the hype but none for critiques - and he did make some good points - particularly if you're a Windows user. And I did learn something because I didn't know Jobs got a piece of the cell phone plan sales...glad he mentioned it.
But thanks for trying to watch it. :)

@Ryan - on the keyboard can you type with two fingers?

I'm not saying that people shouldn't critique it at all. And though I know he says he's not an Apple hater (which I believe), he just seemed to have a lot of hate towards the phone. Some of his points just didn't seem like valid reasons to not want to get the phone.
Don't get me wrong, for things like Jobs getting a piece of the phone plan sales (didn't know that either), I'd be curious to know how many people that would stop in getting the phone.
So no, I'm not against critiques at all. I just didn't like the way he approached his reasons for not wanting to buy the phone. I knew the phone wouldn't be perfect, and I was actually looking forward to reading what people did not like about it.

That's the stupidest move I've seen AT&T do yet. Why cut into their profits like that? Particularly since they are first line support.
As for how many people it would stop from buying it? That could be a very high number. There are people who detest Microsoft so much they refuse to buy anything from them - even a Xbox 360. I'm sure there are people who feel the same way about Jobs particularly since Apple has this "we're better than everyone else" stigma (I don't see it that way but I've had that argument too many times with too many people to say it's not there).
JPhill (or anyone): on the keyboard are you able to type with two fingers? I had a touch screen phone one and I wasn't able to do that.
JPhill
Written Jul. 2, 2007 / Report /
Haha, yeah AT&T bent over hard for that one. I agree with that being a dumb move. I'm not a huge Microsoft fan, but I give everything a chance, so that's retarded (in my opinion) for people not to give a brand a chance.
Anyways, to answer your question, I'm definitely able to type with two fingers pretty well now. They suggested starting off with one finger, but that doesn't feel right. It takes some getting used to though since I was pretty used to getting a physical response back from the phone when you type. But I'm pretty used to typing with two thumbs now, and actually like it a lot. I was skeptical on how I would like it before I got it.

@Tyme & @@Phil: I have to agree, that guy in the video puts the wank in what an idiot wanker.
I don't want to be a super jerk, and he's certainly allowed to express his opinion, and the iPhone isn't Jesus & Mary Magdalene's baby or anything, but I don't know...
He reminds me of the "Genii" or whatever they pluralize themselves at, the too-cool-for-users tech support guys in an Apple Store; or maybe of Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons.
Give. Me. a. Break. iPhone....

For those of you talking about Jobs getting a piece of iPhone sales
When Jobs came back to Apple and started working on OS X, at the time when Apple was heading down a path of bankruptcy, he did so on the terms that he would only take US$1 dollar in annual salary. Instead, he got stock in the downward spiralling company — making his income entirely dependant on the consequent success of Apple.
To this day, he's still receiving an official $1 annual salary.

So jealous. Here down under, we have to wait at least 6 months until we get our hands on one. While it will mean our first iPhones will be V2 still tough seeing people stateside unwrapping all that Apple goodness.
