It's not that subtle... I do find the irony in the fact it just crashed safari though ;)
Overall still not convinced with the width choice but it's becoming more common so getting accepted - also not wanting to start another 800 x 600 war of words ;) Of course, the increased real estate does help the site and it seems much better as an interface as a part of that extra space. I'm not sold on the nav bar but that could just be something I'll get used to. The apple logo for home seems a bit ropey compared to the old one but that could be me not used to the nav. It's going to be a hard site to do anything change wise on and really don't wish I was the poor designer that had to find something that would please people. Overall not bad.
I like it. I'm doing to have to go ahead and say that I definitely liked the old nav bar better (for now at least). But, like you said, I'll get used to that!
The site seems to lack from an accessibility standpoint. One bump up in text on FF pretty much breaks the entire download page and "product slider" is holding on by a thin thread
I think the navigation looks a lot better than the old tabs.
The rest of the site changes seem to be moving towards a unified look which is also a good thing. I'm not sure about chopping and changing between dark and light backgrounds in the different sections but IIRC they have been doing that for ages anyway.
I've always loved the fact that sections had their own unique feel for them, especially considering the different content that was presented on each. You can tell the designers design around the content instead of trying to force the content within a template.
I love the new website! I think its a big step as their site seems so much better then the Microsoft one. They are always one step ahead. In techology and design. The headnavigation is by far better then the old gelbuttons (I hate them!).

I like the look, I DON'T like the fact that URL's have gone from apple.com/safari to this:
https://swdlp.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/SoftwareDownloadApp.woa/954/wo/hAZbqH6Wr7UCF6iOB5ZiOg/2.5

Umm, apple.com/safari works just fine for me though. I like it.

@RightOn
I think they got their re-write engine fixed... I've got pretty URLs here.

Yeah, that is fixed!
Seems like things are falling into place over these past 20min. I keep hitting refresh to fix things!

I don't like the grey header though. It just BUGS ME!

The URLs are fixed now. For a few minutes every time I refreshed I alternately got the new, then old pages.
It's dark, metallic, clean, and Apple. What more is there to say. I'm digging this more than the brushes metal and the aqua looks.
Not too dark, not too light.

I love the redesign, and I think they were long overdue for that.

Basically I think it's better than it was.

I don't much care for the design of the news content on the start page but things were overdue for a design. I like the Nav a lot.

I like the new top menu, the "feel" of the last one was definitely outdated. The redesign looks more like Leopard (or iTunes 7).

Almost embarrassing to think that one of world's most innovative companies had one of the most outdated navigation sections on the web.
