So for a while I've been scheming ways of getting out of my Verizon contract to switch over to Cingular.
I know there was a way to get out of your contract regarding the change of text messaging charges. But, for some reason I just couldn't call Verizon and tell them to cancel my account over a couple pennies a month.
But I've struck gold because my wife just got orders to Korea for a year. Now we can cancel our account (Verizon lets military folks cancel accounts when they move overseas) and then walk across the street to get us some iPhone goodness.
So I'm all set, what kind of deviousness (if any) are you planning?

I just think that it's terrible that Apple is exclusive with Cingular/AT&T. I'm not tied into any cellular service plan and I want one, but I don't want to support Cingular/AT&T even though the iPhone is a great phone and my girl uses Cingular (so the calls between Cingular phones are free). So, I'm kinda conflicted.

Just curious, why do you not want to support cingular/att?
All the cell networks are almost exaclty the same, play the same games, and have the same reliability and quality. The only real exception I can think of is Virgin, because they don't require contracts to get good rates.

i loves me some cingular. best day of my tech life when Apple announced the deal with cingular. the only problem with them i have is that apparently, they must send me a bill detailing all the phonecalls to and from my numbers, so my phone bill is like 50 pages long. maybe it's just in california, but still sucky.

Verizon does that too Lisa. It's infuriating to get a phone bill that can't be sent regular first class because it's too heavy (a slight exageration... but only slight).

I didn't have any devious plan. I only have a couple months left on Verizon, so I just said screw it and switched over to Cingular and just chalk up the $30 for Verizon until it's done.
I do need a plan in actually getting the phone though, because I'm not about to wait in some overnight line to get it. So I need some kind of plan of attack!

For those of you seeking them, remember that AT&T stores will have them in addition to Apple stores. And odds are there's more than one AT&T if you're in a big city.

Is there a penalty from switching your number? I always thought the new cell company paid the fee for you to have you as a customer.

No iPhone joy for me being in the UK! Shame too as my annual contract just expired so I'm on the lookout for a new contract :)

@Lisa: I'm Cingular, too. I'd recommend "going paperless" when you log in online to your account. I haven't gotten a paper bill in the mail (nor a detail of all my calls) in over 2 years!
I'm really tactile when it comes to my cell, so I won't be getting the iPhone. That would be too distracting. :)
