I can't say I know all the facts between how much better for you that Diet Coke is than Coke, but when I see some people drink it I have to wonder what's the point beyond they like the taste more. For example, I was at Wendy's today and this man ordered a triple cheeseburger (wasn't even aware people at these beasts), large fries, 10 nuggets and a Diet Coke. Now after eating all that why not just go to the limit and get a regular Coke or do you think he was really thinking that he was helping himself out by getting the Diet Coke?
I know other people who will pound Captain Morgan and Diet Cokes and tell me that Diet Coke is healthier while they drink down a bottle of liquor.
Now I can understand if you are eating a healthy sandwich or salad and then go for the Diet Coke, but most people I know drinking Diet Coke do it because mentally they think they are saving themselves from the all the bad stuff in Coke.
Please.

I drink diet coke because I avoid almost all sugar. I like diet pepsi better actually.
I completely agree that drinking diet coke with a fatass fast food meal and thinking you're being healthy is ridiculous, but it is a marginal improvement.
Assuming your average value meal gets 12 oz of coke once you account for ice (a can's worth,) that's 150-200 calories depending how heavy the syrup is. Your standard fast food burger is from 500-800 calories. Obviously the coke isn't the worst part of the meal by far. The burger at least has some nutritional value along with it's healthy heaping of calories.

Diet Coke tastes different from regular Coke. I see your point and understand there are people that drink it for its nutritional value (or lack thereof), but plenty of people prefer the taste of Diet Coke. My woman is one.
But as Ozone42 says, even if you are drinking it to be healthy, it is still marginally better for you than pumping in another batch of calories (if you assume it doesn't give you cancer, mucky AIDS, et al - as some have suggested).
Edit: Scrivs could you poke the RSS outputting so the links point at chawlk.com instead of 9rules.com? Or put a redirect in (instead of the "serious error")

I understand doing it do be even just a bit more marginally healthy, but I have to wonder if someone thinks that it is safe to go with the triple cheeseburger as long as they get the Diet Coke instead of something a bit more healthier. I guess I'm of the mindset if you are going to go all out, go all out.

Really, I agree. I'd drink it myself if it wasn't for the sugar. Calories don't bother me so much.

As a Former Fatass (TM), I can tell you this: The line of thought for many of these people (my former self included) includes the following:
a) You're not wasting calories on drink, so you can spare more on the food.
b) You don't want to anger your pancreas too much by drinking a huge soda that's nothing but sugar.
Yeah, I know, weird logic.

If anything must be saved it has to be the pancreas.

I too wonder if people just drink it to make their self esteem hurt less (when they couple it with loads of calories) or if they're ACTUALLY stupid enough to think that it will counter the fat bomb.

Well now that I know there is a fat bomb you got me kind of scared myself.

I've been drinking Diet Coke so long that regular Coke tastes odd to me. But, once in a while I do pig out and get the Diet Coke, but that's just because that's what I'm used to rather than me thinking I'm saving me some calories or "buying" a dessert since I'm cutting back with the Diet Coke. It's what I normally drink, whether I'm eating normal or being a pig.

I'm always thinkin' 'bout it
I don't know what I'd do without it
I love, I really love
My pancreas
My spleen just doesn't matter
Don't really care about my bladder
But I don't leave home without
My pancreas
My pancreas is always there for me
Secreting those enzymes
Secreting those hormones too...
Metabolizing carbohydrates
just for meeeee...
...
My pancreas
attracts
every other pancreas
in the universe
with a force a force a force
proportional
to the products of their masses
and inversely
proportional
to the distance between them...

I fell out of my chair laughing at that. For some strange reason, Gnorb, I imagined Kenny from South Park singing it.

Hey...don't diss spleens. Spleens need your love too!!
I drink normal coke because I think the diet version tastes a little bit weird. Sure it has less sugar in it, but that's just like saying lite cigarettes are more healthy because have less tar in them. Or diet cookies are healthy. It doesn't make any difference if you're guzzling them down alongside a lifestyle that kill you eventually.
You're only kidding yourselves. If you want to enjoy a meal. Go all out.
